HISTORY
The Coastal Bend
AllStars swim club began as Coastal Bend Aquatics in the late
1990’s as a privately owned and incorporated swim club
founded by world record setter, and Past Canadian World Game &
Commonwealth Games, swim team coach, Bill Barton and his daughter
Andra Barton, who was a Canadian record holder. Bill Barton
has coached many American & Canadian record holders over the
years. The Bartons coached swimmers who won over fifty South
Texas championship gold medals and several Texas Age Group
qualifiers and finalists.
Many of the CBA swimmers also represented their respective high
schools with distinction, often winning region championships and
advancing to the state championships. In the summer of 2002,
the Bartons realized that the Coastal Bend Aquatics swim club would
be able to encourage more swimmers of varying socio-economic
backgrounds to participate if the club became a non-profit
organization. The Bartons turned the incorporated Coastal
Bend AllStars into a non-profit organization. Bill and Andra
believed in the members of their club who by now had become like
family, and these members believed in them.
OMPETITION PHILOSOPHY
. . . and the winner
is . . . CBA coaching staff does not see the first place person as
the only winner. We look to see who behaves
like a winner. Every swimmer, no matter where they place, has
the opportunity to emulate the characteristics of a winner.
We use sport as organized play to demonstrate and measure
one’s abilities. Sport is used more as a vehicle to
teach children life skills and how to reach their potential.
We believe in winning. However, in competition, the
important measure is not who collected the most medals, or even who
improved the most seconds. The real measure is who learned
the most from the competitive experience . . . CBA engages in a
multi-level competition program with USA Swimming that, like our
training program, provides challenging, yet success-oriented
competitive situations for swimmers of all ages and
abilities. Swimmers are taught to create challenging goals
for meets and to relate those goals to practice.
